The bones and shells of animals are not solid, but contain many canals and pores. Bones are particularly porous in the central regions, which are filled with soft marrow when the animal is alive. The soft tissues decay when the animal dies, but the hard, porous parts may become buried and then permeated with groundwater, containing dissolved minerals. Minerals, such as calcium carbonate or silica, precipitate out of the groundwater and fill up the pores and cavities in the bone, cementing it into solid rock. This is the most common type of fossilization and sometimes the process is so complete that even the details of the cell structure within the bone is preserved.
